Major Web Outage Affects Numerous Online Platforms and Mobile Apps

A large-scale online outage has impacted dozens sites and mobile apps globally, with users reporting troubles getting online after problems at the online infrastructure system.

The affected services include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-operated services such as its main retail platform and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users turned to networks to complain their home gadgets were not working.

In the UK alone, notifications of problems on particular applications ran into the thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the east coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a unit that offers essential web backbone for a host of companies, who utilize space on the company's servers. AWS is the biggest global online services platform.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), the company announced “elevated error rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The cascading impact seemed to hit services globally, with the outage tracking website showing outages with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a rise in issues on that morning, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the problems began.
