Rare Scarlet Lightning Recorded in the Heavens

Three image specialists based in the island nation have successfully captured visual evidence of crimson flashes, among the most elusive celestial events on Earth, during which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists initially planned to photograph the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that evening, but their shooting session transformed into “an unforgettable one,” a team member commented.

Upon examining his files for a Milky Way panorama and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual said. “It was unbelievable – we experienced excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, produced by storm systems. In contrast to conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the ground, red sprites shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, creating structures that look like vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a such an event was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – persisting for a mere instant – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but an individual got lucky. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward an occurrence when it took place – pure chance viewing the appropriate section of the firmament and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he commented.

Witnessing the events was a dream for the artist, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to observe.”

Advanced and Creative Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon requires a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and creative flare, the individual explained. “It’s a really involved type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

Another photographer said it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I witnessed the starry river illuminating above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of energy moved above a storm at a great distance,” he said.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs depicting red sprites and the night sky of the south in one frame.

“It represented a unique instance when you understand you are seeing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
