The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to Your World
The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it includes the initial fresh armament added to the game since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates several new features and enhancements related to animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."
If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a primary applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer says. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and get increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport right away.
Another major addition in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is modeled after the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no necessity to come up for air for oxygen.
The rest of the additions are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've pondered this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also unveil something for the ocean depths," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can cross waterways while mounted on a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
